Today, MPs voted against the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, meaning the Bill will not progress further through Parliament.
We know there will be different reactions to today’s result across our hospice and our wider community. Some people will feel relieved, others disappointed, and others may have mixed feelings.
Throughout this debate, we have remained neutral on whether the law on assisted dying should change. But we have been clear about something we believe passionately. Everyone deserves excellent care at the end of their life. No one should feel frightened that the care they need won’t be there for them.
That is why our focus now – just as it was before today’s vote – is on improving access to hospice and end of life care, tackling inequalities in who receives that care, and securing sustainable funding so hospices can be there for everyone who needs us.
Whatever happens in the national debate about assisted dying in the future, our commitment remains the same. We will be here for the people of Greenwich and Bexley, supporting anyone living with a terminal illness to live as well as they can, for as long as they can.
