Our volunteer application process

So you're interested in volunteering with us? Great.

We want you to feel supported and informed as you go through the application and onboarding process with us. Here's what you can expect as well as some useful documents to help you feel prepared.

Interviewing with us

Once you've applied for your chosen role, we'll invite you to an informal interview with a member of the volunteering department. This can either take place in person at the hospice or online over Microsoft Teams - whatever works best for you.

Our informal interviews usually last between 20-40 minutes and are a great opportunity for us to get to know you, answer any questions you might have and ensure the role is the best match for you.

If there are any specific ways we can support you through the interview process or in your volunteering role going forward, please do tell us. We want you to feel prepared and confident ahead of your interview, so we've shared our interview questions in advance below. There's also a handy guide with details on how to find us if your interview is at the hospice.

Next steps

If your informal interview is successful, we'll arrange a taster session for your chosen role. Whether you've applied to volunteer in one of our shops, supporting with admin work or in our hospice gardens, you'll have a chance to spend a couple of hours with the team, learning more about the role and what's involved.

In the meantime, we'll arrange some checks. Most of our volunteer roles require 2 reference checks and a few roles require DBS checks too. We'll make sure you're kept up to date about these checks and what's needed.

Welcoming you to the team

If your taster is successful and your checks are complete - you will officially join Community Hospice as a volunteer.

In your first few weeks and months of volunteering you can expect to:

  • Start some initial training in your role
  • Begin receiving our monthly email Volunteer Updates
  • Receive invites to our regular volunteer socials
  • Have your profile created on our volunteering hub, Assemble
