When Harbhajan Kaur Seera, lovingly known as Mama died at the age of 86, her family lost the heart of their home. Mama’s warmth, kindness and laughter touched everyone she met. Her grandchildren remember her as “the light in the room, guiding everyone with love and care.”
The hospice that made a difference
When Mama became seriously ill, she wanted to stay at home with her family. The hospice’s community team made this possible. Her granddaughter, Amrit, remembers the difference their support made:
“The support the hospice provided was so seamless, we could almost call them a silent saviour. Community Hospice was there on call 24/7 whenever we needed them, the nurses that would visit and care for granny daily became part of the family and were so warm and loving, as if they were caring for their own mother. They learnt how to speak small words in Punjabi to say hello to Granny and they listened to our stories of Granny and her life and how she raised us. It really helped take a lot of mental and physical strain from us, the family, as we processed the emotional strain of our grandmother becoming terminally ill and eventually losing her. She wanted to spend her last days at home. The hospice gave us that and more.”
Being cared for at home allowed Mama to enjoy her familiar surroundings, her own chair, her own bed and the comfort of family nearby. This made an incredibly difficult time more bearable for everyone.
Keeping her values alive
Family, love and giving back were at the heart of Mama’s life. Her grandchildren wanted to honour her memory in a way that reflected those values. They took part in races to raise money for the hospice, turning their personal challenge into a tribute that celebrates her spirit.
“Supporting the hospice is a way for us to carry on her values. It is about helping others, giving back to the community and keeping family at the centre of everything,” Amrit explains. “It made us realise how much of a difference the hospice made for our family and how important their work is for others in similar situations. We think Mama would be extremely proud of us.”
Your gift can give comfort, care and dignity
The reality is that any of us or someone we love may one day need the compassionate care the hospice provides. Leaving a gift in your will is a way to make sure more people can receive the same comfort, support and dignity that Mama had in her final days.
By leaving a gift in your will, you can help the hospice continue to be there for families when it matters most.
