How 7-year-old Thomas is inspiring a community to run for care

After joining his local Junior Park Run and spotting our leaflet, Thomas knew he wanted to take part in the Hospice Mini Marathon. Since then, he’s inspired his best friend René to join the race and even sparked interest among other parents and pupils at his school!

At just seven years old, Thomas is already making strides to change lives.

After joining his local Junior Parkrun, Thomas came home one day with a leaflet about our Hospice Mini Marathon and eagerly told his family he wanted to take part. When asked why, he simply said:

"I wanted to run the marathon because I like raising money and helping people have a happy life… and I like running!"

Thomas

Though Thomas and his family haven’t needed the care of Community Hospice personally, they’ve always supported hospices and understand their vital role. His parents are monthly lottery donors, and they’re passionate about raising awareness, a value that’s clearly inspired Thomas too.

As he prepares for race day, Thomas is especially excited about two things:

"Running a long way and all the training with Daddy. I’m also looking forward to getting a medal and seeing my best friend René finish too!"

(Yes, Thomas has already inspired René to join in the challenge.)

And it’s not just René. After his mum shared a fundraising message on the school WhatsApp group, other parents from Chatsworth Infants School expressed interest too. So Thomas might just be starting a mini movement of young fundraisers in the making!

For his family, this challenge has opened up important conversations about hospice care and the power of giving back:

“The biggest thing has been opening up a conversation with Thomas about the work you do and how it’s important to help if you can.”

Feeling inspired?

Register your child to join our Hospice Mini Marathon at Royal Greenwich Park on Sunday 11 May. It’s a fun and meaningful way to get active, support local hospice care and make a difference, just like Thomas.
