At the hospice, one of our priorities is around making sure that we’re able to support all of the diverse cultural backgrounds in Greenwich and Bexley, and that our services meet the needs of our diverse community.
We recently teamed up with Active Horizons, a local youth charity based in Erith, in order to hear from members of the Afro-Caribbean community about the (often) difficult subject of death and dying, and to help to break down some of the stigma that surrounds it. We held a healthy cooking workshop at the Active Horizons Hub, and this was the backdrop to open up conversation…
We wanted to create an environment that replicated a family dynamic, we asked the young people at Active Horizons (aged 9-14) to facilitate the workshop and take on the role of interviewers.
The young interviewers were trained up to help them understand what the hospice does and how to have conversations about us and the work we do. This was led by our social worker Jude and community engagement manager Sim.
