Gifts in wills helps secure hospice care for generations to come. And every penny counts. So, whether you’re able to gift us a percentage of your estate, after your loved ones are taken care of, or a household item – your gift will make a difference.

But we know that writing a will can feel overwhelming. Especially if you don’t know where to start. We’re with you every step of the way. Whilst we can’t offer legal advice, here are five easy steps to leaving a gift in your will to the Hospice.

Step 1: Our charity details

To ensure your gift reaches us, you will need our full name and details.

Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice, a charity registered in England and Wales, no. 1017406. Registered address: Community Hospice, 185 Bostall Hill, London, SE2 0GB.

Step 2: Decide on the type of gift

There are three main types of gifts that you can leave in your will. Any of these would be gratefully received.

A residuary gift – this is a percentage, or share, of the balance of your estate once all other payments and gifts have been made to your loved ones.

A pecuniary gift – this is a fixed amount of money.

An item – this is a specific item, such as a piece of art or jewellery or a property.

Step 3: Consider inheritance tax

If your estate is valued at over the government threshold, it will be subject to inheritance tax. By leaving a gift in your will to charity, which is tax free, you can reduce the amount of inheritance tax, all whilst supporting a good cause. When you leave a gift in your will to Community Hospice, you’re leaving a gift for the whole community.

Step 4: Write or adjust your will

If you already have a will, contact your solicitor who can adjust it using a codicil. This is an official document, which needs to be signed and witnessed.

If you don’t have a will, you can contact a solicitor or use our free service, Farewill, from the comfort of home. Book a free 15-minute call to speak with a specialist about writing your will.

Step 5: Let us know if you’ve left us a gift in your will

Knowing about your gift helps us plan for the future, but we respect your decision to keep this private if you prefer. If you do choose to let us know, we would love to thank you for your incredible generosity and let you know just how important your gift is to us. You can email us at team@gbch.org.uk, call us on 020 8320 5875 or write to us at Community Hospice, 185 Bostall Hill, London, SE2 0GB.
